New guitar effects pedal aimed at the Band of Gypsy's era launched | Fillmore Thunder Fuzz and Octave pedal. What Guitar effects pedals did Jimi Hendrix use? by Elite Tone

Fillmore Thunder Recreates Hendrix Sound Elite Tone, the Minnesota-based custom boutique pedal maker, has released the new ‘Fillmore Thunder’ a 2x channel guitar effect pedal. This limited-edition pedal effectively reproduces the legendary sound produced by Jimi Hendrix in the latter half of his career. “It is a revolutionary take on an old sound”, says Elite Tone President David Nelson. At the core of this ring-modulator pedal is a 4 knob classic silicon Fuzz Face circuit (with the addition of a gain control and transistor bias) decked out with a set of classic BC-108 vintage transistors. The Fillmore Thunder Pedal is a two-stage effect. Most notable is the octave portion of the circuit, said Nelson. “This circuit was designed NOT as an Octavia clone -- but rather as a practical and articulate 60’s sounding octave-up pedal. Our emphasis was development of the warm fidelity and prominent “steel drum pinging” octave sound found on such songs as “Who Knows?” , an opening number on Hendrix’s “Live at the Fillmore East” album. “ “We took on the challenge of designing this pedal to address common complaints about its predecessors – such as the Tycobrahe and subsequent clones,” said Nelson. He explained that these predecessors are often plagued by a lot of harsh tinny distortion. Another limitation is that the ‘octave sweet spots’ can only be played in the middle of the guitar neck. “After nearly 40 years, the genuine Hendrix sound on his old records has never been fully duplicated,” Nelson said. He believes users will find that the The Fillmore Thunder has broken through that barrier. “It produces an extraordinary octave-up sound that is liquid, natural and smooth. It’s pure Hendrix-era ear candy”, Nelson said. He added that the Fillmore Thunder offers other great benefits – it produces a whole gamut of octave sounds all the way up and down the neck. Plus, the Fillmore Thunder is designed to consistently function with existing equipment and works well with single coil and Humbucker pick-ups. It functions individually by itself or in tandem with the fuzz for a roaring, yet round harmonic sound. The next best part of this pedal is the price, Nelson

Are analog boutique guitar effects pedals better or just hype?Elite Tone

While many debates exist surrounding the exact nature and origins of guitar effects pedals, and their sound quality. In this article we will exam a brief history of the stompbox market and the inner workings of the various equipment and what they can offer you. No well rounded story should go forth without first crediting the Gibson Maestro Fuzz Tone. The Fuzz Tone pedal introduced the world to its very first distortion pedal for the electric guitar, residing in that all important floor dwelling wedge of an enclosure. Soon after many popular group's utilized it such as; The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Monkey's and so on... Fast forward 15 years later, to the late'70's. In the integrated circuit or IC for short was become prevalent in almost everything a modern customer owned. The bridge between digital and analog equipment closed and brought forth again the same technological mantra of cheaper, faster, smaller. And with it, the tone at the local music store changed a lot! Torrents of data into micro seconds. Computer binary code, encoding audio signals. Delay's were among some of the most notable innovations of the digital revolution of the'80's. Its important to say that many of the most avid analog effects guru's agree that digital, yes I said 'digital' delay's are probably of greatest importance to the active musician. Warm analog bucket brigades are great, but its a known fact that analog delays have a very poor band width quality resulting in grainy sound replication. So a good compromise is too integrate an analog to digital converter system for example. The retro interest in vintage pedals returns! A certain crowd of musicians expressed an interest in the old equipment. And with that surge of interest rapidly emerged. Many small businesses have cropped up and more than validate this new and retro movement. So of them went from vintage effects dealers to designing a whole host of their own effects. Now relatively new customers often request a precise obsolete part, with the knowledge of audio properties before purchase. Such as a of mojo germanium transistors in a fuzz pedal for example. Or a special chip that an overdrive contained over 30 years ago. Designer quarrel over the validity of these observation. While many more claim old electronic components and assembly method's. However in the final analysis, like all subjective arts have at least one thing in common, "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder".

Analog vs Digital audio? Elite Tone

Recently analog audio has had a resurgence of interest. A good market indicator of this is the recent climb in vinyl record sales. For example, many classic albums are being reproduced and sold as new. Many audiophiles maintain that while digital audio media has its benefits, analog still has a more natural and rich tone. This has creates a division and conflict of interest in the audio community. Throughout the course of this article we examine the argument and points of view from both the digital and analog prospective and as it applies to musicians and music in general. The subcategories are consumer electronics, mp3's , cd's, records, musical instruments and audio recording methods. First what is the definition of analog? Well the general consensus is that analog is define as physical medium applied to generate a concussive air pressure wave producing a projection of sound. Thomas Edison is created as the original creator of this technology-0 years ago with the invention of the phonograph. Edison's devices consisted of a cone diaphragm suspended over a malleable recording material (originally lead film canister's). As the canisters was rotated by a hand crank, the operator spoke in the cone and the vibration caused a needle or recoding stylus to carve out a pattern. To play back the recorded sound, the hand crank was rotated a counter clockwise fashion to produce the sound by causing the speaker cone to vibrate and produce an audible signal. Later, the metal film recording medium was replaced by the wax disc or record. This had many benefits, including better audio fidelity, recording length etc... Later the vacuum tube provided an ability to amplify the audio signal. The vacuum tube is the central core and key to developing a volume boost and projecting the sound to even greater amplitude. Ushering in the recording industry. Then the advent of the transistor in'47 by Bell Laboratories, achieved the next milestone, one that radically reinvent the modern world as we know it. Also important to note, is that the transistor now meant, digital logic circuits were practical and commercially viable. This now meant that recorded sound could be encoded in binary language sending digital bytes then, reprocessed into sound. Digital cd's have great band width ability but the quality of the sound is questionable. First, its not natural. Analog guitar effects pedals enhances a natural phenomena. The crack of a lightning bolt sends shock waves to the ear this is natures analog sound for instance. Digital replicates this but not perfectly. This disadvantage is evident to if we think of ocean waves. A clearly visible effect, you'll notice that each wave is not a perfect diagonal from top to bottom. Its actually a gradual soft slope "S" curve. While digital has a greater storage capacity the analog signal clearly has a sound quality advantage because it doesn't simulate a "S" wave, it captures it! In the final analysis the definition of good sound depends the person's subjective option. I hope sheds some light on understanding the difference between the analog and digital.
